DATA 420 - Modeling and Simulation - Spring 2024
Possible experience: up to +30XP
Due: Friday, April 26, midnight
Write a 1½-to-2-page (single spaced) reflective response to Nate Silver's The Signal and the Noise. You may re-use some of the material from your first responsive reading if you wish; however, you should think through what you wrote again and consider how much of it is still true about your thinking. You should also weave that previous material into your new narrative, which will include information from the second half of the book and which therefore will be somewhat different. All in all, at least half of the content of this reflection paper should be brand new.
As before, your response should seek to identify several major themes from the book, and expand upon them. I'm looking for an analysis of the most important principles that you've taken from the book.
The themes should each be present in multiple chapters (at least two, preferably three) rather than confined to a single chapter. For each theme, you can choose something that surprised you, something you disagree with, or something that changed your thinking. Briefly relate to the reader what Nate said on the subject, and then expand upon it. Examples of "expanding" include: explaining why you think he's wrong; elaborating on another application or domain where his lesson applies; offering a caveat or limitation to a point he makes; articulating on the further implications or unintended consequences of something he champions; narrating your own personal experience related to something he writes; etc.
As you can see, I'm giving you a great deal of latitude in what you write. That's because he covers a lot of ground in this work, and there will be a wide variety of reactions to it. Something different will stick out to each reader. So wrestle with some of the things he's written, and show me the transcript of that wrestling match.
Your paper should be completely free of grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors. It should feature writing worthy of a UMW student, not a high school student. It should be broken into paragraphs appropriately, where each paragraph covers one coherent topic. It should also be compelling, logical, entertaining, and a pleasure to read.
To be clear, I'm not looking for any particular opinion on any of the topics Nate tackles. Do feel free to thoughtfully and carefully agree or disagree with him wherever you like. Do support your reasoning, however.
One of the great assets of UMW is the Speaking and Writing Center. Their army of student consultants are super-friendly, happy, smart people who are also excellent writers. I enthusiastically encourage you to seek out their services, either to brainstorm ideas for your themes, to get feedback on how you've organized your paper and expressed yourself, and in general to improve your writing in any way. Take advantage of this service!
To submit this assignment, print out your paper on a printer, staple it with a stapler, and put it in the manila folder labeled "420" immediately outside my Farmer basement office.
