The Signal and the Noise Reflection Paper

Possible experience: up to +50XP

Due: Tuesday, April 21, 5pm

Reflection Paper

Write a 2-page (single spaced) reflective response to Nate Silver's The Signal and the Noise. It should seek to identify two (or at most, three) major themes of the book, each of which manifests itself in multiple chapters. I'm looking for a deep and profound analysis of the most important principles that you took from the book, supported by examples, and expanded upon in your own way.

The themes can come from anywhere in the book, but should each be present in multiple places (let's say at least three chapters) rather than confined to a single chapter. For each theme, you can choose something that surprised you, something you disagree with, or something that changed your thinking. Briefly describe to the reader what Nate said on the subject, and then expand upon it. Examples of "expanding" include: explaining why you think he's wrong; elaborating on another application or domain where his lesson applies; offering a caveat or limitation to a point he makes; articulating on the further implications or unintended consequences of something he champions; narrating your own personal experience related to something he writes; etc.

As you can see, I'm giving you a great deal of latitude in what you write. That's because he covers a lot of ground in this work, and there will be a wide variety of reactions to it. Something different will stick out to each reader. So wrestle with some of the things he's written, and show me the transcript of that wrestling match.

It goes without saying

Your paper should be completely free of grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors. It should feature writing worthy of a UMW student, not a high school or community college student. It should be broken into paragraphs appropriately, where each paragraph covers one coherent topic. It should also be compelling, logical, entertaining, and a pleasure to read.

It also goes without saying

To be clear, I'm not looking for any particular opinion on any of the topics Nate tackles. Do feel free to thoughtfully and carefully agree or disagree with him wherever you like. Do support your reasoning, however.

The Writing Center

One of the great assets of UMW is its the Speaking and Writing Center Their staff is full of super-friendly, happy, smart people who are also excellent writers. I enthusiastically encourage you to seek out their services, either to brainstorm ideas for your themes, to get feedback on how you've organized your paper and expressed yourself, and in general to improve your writing in any way. Take advantage of this service!

Turning it in
